Mission to Madagascar: Assessing Needs and Building Community Connections

From October 11th to 18th, Sr. Sheeba Thomas, Sr. Chimene, and Sr. Shobha Stanly embarked on a mission to Madagascar, coinciding with their Congregation's Founder’s week. Despite initial challenges, including Sr. Shobha's lost passport, their journey proceeded with divine assistance. Upon arriving in Antananarivo, they were warmly received by Sr. Miriam of the Sacred Heart of Ragusa. Their mission took them to various cities, including Diego and Daraina, where they were met with enthusiastic welcomes, singing, and dancing from local communities. They explored the potential for establishing a new convent, supported by the local Bishop Marc Benjamin and Mr. Merenti, who offered land for this purpose. In Vohemar, they witnessed the vibrant faith of over 1000 students and villagers, culminating in an Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The delegation also participated in a Holy Eucharist and Confirmation ceremony for 62 children and adults. Throughout their visit, they observed the natural beauty and rich resources of Madagascar, alongside the significant social and economic challenges faced by the local population. This mission underscored their commitment to helping the people of Madagascar achieve development and progress while encouraging the sisters to respond to the Holy Spirit’s call to address contemporary issues with renewed dedication.

In 2008, the Congregation of SJSM expanded its mission and established communities in the Philippines, marking a significant milestone in our journey. The decision to extend our reach to this vibrant and diverse country was driven by a vision to share our Charism of Adoration and Service, rooted in Eucharistic Spirituality, with more people. Currently, we have two flourishing communities located on different islands. One community is situated in Cavite City, which is in close proximity to the bustling capital, Manila. Cavite City offers a dynamic environment where our sisters engage in various ministries, reaching out to the local population with compassion and dedication. This community has become a beacon of hope and spiritual enrichment for many residents. The other community is located in San Carlos, another significant area within the Philippines. This community also plays a crucial role in the spiritual and social development of the region, fostering a sense of belonging and support among the local people. The sisters here work tirelessly to embody the values of our Congregation, making a tangible difference in the lives they touch. One of the most inspiring aspects of our mission in the Philippines is the growing interest among young girls to join our Congregation. Many are drawn to our way of life, motivated by the desire to live out the Charism of Adoration and Service. These young aspirants are eager to embrace the Eucharistic Spirituality that defines our Congregation, committing themselves to a life of prayer, service, and community living. The establishment of these communities has not only broadened our geographical reach but also enriched our Congregation with the cultural diversity and vibrant spirit of the Filipino people. As we continue to nurture and support these communities, we remain committed to our mission of spreading love, faith, and service across the Philippines and beyond.
In summary, our communities in the Philippines are thriving centers of spiritual growth and service. The dedication of our sisters and the enthusiastic response from young aspirants highlight the impactful presence of our Congregation in this beautiful country. We look forward to further growth and deeper engagement with the Filipino community, fostering a future filled with hope and faith.

Rom 8, 35 – 39: Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?   And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. These three young sisters (Sr. Emmanuela, Sr. Mischel & Sr. Tadea) of our Ukraine Region have taken this text of St. Paul seriously and have consecrated themselves to follow Jesus. Despite hearing the alarm of missiles several times a day, facing many difficulties during this time of war for more than two years, they happily vowed on 7 September, 2024 to be brides of Jesus. Hearty Congratulations my dear sisters! May you experience God’s protection, care and faithfulness at every walk of your life!
