Glimpse of Sjsm

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Saint-Marc was founded by the dream and desire of Fr. Pierre Paul Blanck from Turckheim, Alsace in France. He was deeply influenced by the exceptional personality of his father, Francis Joseph, who was a physician and an exemplary Christian. He participated in the Holy Mass every day and always carried with him St. Alphonsus Liguori’s booklet entitled, „Visits to the Most Blessed Sacrament“

From the very beginning, Abbé Blanck wanted to place the Congregation in the radiance of the Eucharistic Jesus. In this perspective, he suggested to „persons having more taste for prayer and solitude“ to form a community dedicated to the perpetual adoration of the Lord present in the Most Blessed Sacrament..

The Founder placed the community under the patronage of St. Joseph. Is not Joseph the greatest contemplative of all, the silent one who is attentive to God’s Word and engages his whole conscience as a responsible man to obey it? God himself invests him with his own authority and entrusts to him the role of Father for his begotten Son. Along with Mary, Joseph is associated with the great work of salvation.

According to Fr. Paul Blanck, the aim of the Congregation should be:

  • Perpetual adoration of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament
  • Education of Children
  • Care of the sick and the poor.
In his vision, this Congregation would be a blessing for the diocese and the entire Church by their zealous prayer life, their work and their asceticism. Today, SJSM has 4 provinces and 1 Region. The Mother Province is at Saint-Marc, France which has 10 communities. German Province has 11 communities. Sanjo Province, Vengoor in India has 36 communities, spread in 7 states (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarpradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Delhi) and 3 countries (India, USA and the Philippines). St. Joseph Province, Indore – India has 35 communities widely spread in 10 states (Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Assam and Nagaland) and in 3 countries (India, USA and Italy) Ukraine Region has 3 communities 1 each in Kiev, Lviv and Pausching. „To live the mystery of the Eucharist is the essential characteristic of our Congregation“, and that is what we as members of SJSM strive in our lives. .
